Remembering Melvalene Cohen
Submitted by Alison Reynolds
Longtime Timbergrove Manor resident Melvalene Cohen passed away on January 10, 2022, at the age of 98. Mrs. Cohen is remembered lovingly by her family and friends in Houston, having given much of her time and talent to our community over the decades.
She and her husband Carl W. Cohen opened Studewood Food Market at 830 Studewood in the Heights in the 1950s. They later co-founded the Houston Heights Association in 1973. Mrs. Cohen also served on the Houston Arts Commission and was instrumental in procuring the Lom- bard Lamp, which shines brightly on the Carl and Melvalene Cohen Plaza, located at 11th Street and Heights Boulevard.
Mrs. Cohen was an active member of the Houston Heights Woman’s club and the Floradora Club. The TMCC wishes her family well and is thankful to neighbors like Melvalene who make our neighborhood such a wonderful place to live.
